Tenebrae Prayer Service

  • St Anne's Anglican Church 26 Highfields Road Highfields, Queensland 4352 (map)

Tenebrae is a solemn service of psalms and laments, anticipating the events of Good Friday. During the service, candles are gradually extinguished until only one remains lit, symbolising the light of Christ. It is traditionally held on the Wednesday of Holy Week.

This service begins in semi-darkness and ends with candles extinguished.  The readings and music reflect a solemn tone. This is the only service which may be difficult for small children.

Tenebrae means darkness or shadow in Latin.
